Using Your Own Account is COOL

February 27, 2009@ 3:59 pm

Just a quick note:

Using your own account is cool.  People who use other people’s user names are bozos.  Yes, I said bozos.

Please keep in mind that I check comments constantly….so please do not post under another person’s user name.

There will be consequences for those who abuse this system.

Have a great weekend! :)

Fresh Content Added Daily

February 25, 2009@ 7:08 pm

Welcome to our new site.

There are a lot of features and services available to students, parents, and staff that were previously unavailable on the old site and even more currently in development.

Over the next couple weeks we will be adding all sorts of great ways for you to stay up to date with everything going on at Courtice Secondary School. For now you can start off by checking the site out, registering for an account, and checking back often for updates.

Registering for an account has many advantages. One of the main benefits of being a member of this site is that it gives you the opportunity to voice your opinions online by posting comments and contributing to the forum.

In the very near future we will also be hiring a team of student writers to contribute their very own content to the site. You could write about things like Student Council updates, the scores from your most recent rugby game or discuss your ISU’s in the school forum.

Again, be sure to check back often for upcoming web events and contests.

Official Soft Launch

February 17, 2009@ 8:02 pm

After our staff meeting Tuesday, we are officially launching our new site. There are many things on the go with the site right now.

This week we will begin by registering staff on the site. By default everyone initially begins as a student, once I notice that there are new members I will check to see if any of them are in fact staff then I will bump their privileges up to that of a staff member, then you will be able to add your own content. As soon as I make the instructional videos (probably in the next 24 hours) you will be able to use them to guide you through these processes. Please choose a user name that indicates to me that you are comfortable for everyone to see, a simple convention would be to use something like MrVaughan, or MrGVaughan, not that your username should be all one word and not contain any special characters or begin with a number.

One of my main priorities this week is making the site look as it does in firefox, chrome, opera, and IE7, the basic reasoning is that all current web standard for the rest of the web is not supported by IE6 and virtually every web developer goes through this headache with every site they design, they first end up having to make it work on all other browser then insert an alternate style sheet to work for IE6, because all of our computers use IE6 (6 years old) this is a priority that I will be working on and hopefully have resolved by the end of Wednesday this week.

Your first opportunity to learn how the site works will be on Thursday Feb. 19th after school in 111. I added this event to the events calendar on the site as well. I am also available to help anyone during period 3 and 4 just let me know if you want to meet and I’ll take the time to sit down and help you out.

The staff index page is also on the top of my priority list I will be designing a similar page to the one on our old site (which will from now on be referred to as the dinosaur). This page will list each staff member along with their email address, and links to their individual page (advanced feature soon to be implemented) along with tags associate with their typical posts (name, course codes, subject, etc.)

People probably have a lot of ideas, questions, concerns, requests, etc. I’m not quite a miracle worker but I can try to do what I can for the site and listen to your concerns. I started a new forum topic for it so once you are registered feel free to head over their to post your ideas.

A lot of school wide content needs to be created/transfered from the dinosaur and probably could stand to be updated as well. Once your comfortable with the site, let me know and I will upgrade your account and you will all be able to help me update some of the content.

I am also in the process of developing a user agreement for the site. Your input and help would be appreciated as it would allow me to focus more of my energy on site issues rather then content. I also started a topic for this issue in the forum.

Our main school contact info and and improved search bar will also be inserted on the top right of the page over top of the banner image bellow the film strip. This is a technical addition that I will be working on this week.

I will also be installing some advanced analytic tools so we can easily judge what pages are being used and visited frequently as the site grows.

This should get us through the first week for now. I anticipate many more updates as the site progresses.
