SBI4U1: Grade 12 University Biology
February 18th, 2010
This course continues from Grade 11 University Biology, but looks at Biology from a molecular perspective .
Usually taught by Mrs. Fife and / or Mr. Parker.
ISU
Research and present to the class an issue in Biology.
Unit 1 : Biochemistry
A look at the most important of the biological molecules. The so called building blocks of life!
Unit#2: Metabolic Processes
Metabolism is a combination of two important processes. Anabolism is the building up of large molecules, and Catabolism is the breaking down of large molecules. Both these processes involve the transfer of energy between chemical bonds, and are the way living organisms acquire and use energy.

Unit#3: Molecular Genetics
In grade 11, Genetics was studied from a Mendelian standpoint, stressing mainly the outward expression of genes ( The Phenotype, and its corresponding Genotype ). In Grade 12 Biology, the emphasis is more on the chemical nature of DNA and how it exerts its genetic control on a chemical level. The so called; “One Gene : One Polypeptide theory of genetics.

Unit#4: Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the process of maintaining a balanced internal environment. It requires a complex series of feedback monitoring involving the Nervous, Endocrine, Excretory and many other systems.
Unit#5: Population Dynamics
A look at the complex interactions between individuals of the same species, and between those of different species. This unit will also look at the various models of population growth and the growth rates of Human populations.
