40 Hours – Community Involvement

Community Involvement Diploma Requirement
 
All students must complete 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. Community Service hours are to be completed at a not for profit organization or within your own community.  
 
* Community service hours may not be completed at for profit business or in your own home. If you have any questions regarding appropriate community service hours please see Mrs. Kirkland in the Guidance Department.
 
Effective July 1, 2011 students will be able to start accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter grade 9.

Please Note:   Students should photocopy their 40 hours Community Involvement sheet before handing them in to Guidance.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT INFORMATION 

Community involvement must include service to the community. Duties normally performed in one’s own home, for immediate family, personal recreational activities, or working in an established business do not qualify as community involvement.
 
They are to be completed
 
  •  OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS
  •  IN NOT-FOR-PROFIT, PUBLIC OR INFORMAL SETTINGS

In the community, by offering assistance to charities, service clubs and other not-for-profit organizations such as

- canvassing, walk-a-thons

- coaching sports teams 

- helping to organize community events; e.g., winter carnival, summer fair

- participating in environmental projects, e.g., clean-up, flower or tree planting, recycling programs

- assisting in a seniors’ residence by serving snacks, helping with crafts

- participating on committees; e.g., advisory boards, school committees

- participating n community services;  e.g., United Way, local Food Banks, Meals on Wheels, 4-H Club

In the school, by helping out in non-credit extracurricular activities such as:
 

- drama festival

- assisting in school activities; e.g., Science Fairs, guide for Parents’ Night, fund raising, technical crew for productions

- participating in school/community activities; e.g., Students Supporting Seniors (outside of school hours)

 
Individuals in need, by providing assistance such as:
 

- activities involving seniors; e.g., helping to shop, shoveling snow, hospital visits with chronic care patients

- activities with young people; e.g., tutoring, transcribing, reading buddies.

 
 
The following is a list of ineligible activities
 
you will NOT be granted community hours for the following
 

- working in a business

- students cannot perform the duties of a paid worker or apprentice to fulfill the community involvement  requirement.

- normal duties at home

- operation of motor vehicles or power tools

- court ordered programs

- babysitting

- cooperative education portion of a course, job shadowing, work experience
